Rare Loot Chance, on the other hand, only maxes out at 10% after four total upgrades, and doesn’t seem to be worth the boost. #8: As starting perks for novice pilots go, you can’t ignore resource and loot centric perks, especially Credit Loot Bonus, which will greatly speed up your progression. Use that downtime to pan the camera around in freelook, get your bearings, and chart an exploratory detour or two. Ship energy reserves recharge twice as fast when passive and immobile, but only after a very brief cooldown. #7: Don’t simply rush from point A to point B in a straight hard burn. Instead of boosting at all, fall back on the familiar circle-strafing of traditional shooter combat, and combine that with the verticality of space to hover up and down, in order to evade incoming fire. #6: Balance the concurrent use of boost-dodging and weapon-firing, as doing so is a strain on energy reserves. The default key binding for Action Freeze on PC is ‘Z’. This is especially useful in scanning for mines your ship could trigger while weaving through the tight spaces around space derelicts and debris fields. #5: Use Everspace 2’s photo mode, dubbed ‘Action Freeze,’ as a reconnaissance tool. Be wary of quick reinforcements jumping in immediately after destroying the Okkar faction’s Corvettes and Frigates. The individual turrets on Colonial Warships can be targeted and destroyed, but these final wave ships themselves cannot, so lower their priority. Another use of pause time would be to strategize and determine your targeting priority for large groups of enemies: Drones first, since they deal high damage, but are relatively weak. The only exception is one very specific sector (1-6) in Hardcore mode, where menu pausing is one of two selectable handicaps. #3: And make effective use of the ability to pause time in the equipment menus to craft those secondaries and consumables, even in the midst of battle. While total annihilation isn’t necessary, you could lose out on potential profits from failing to dismantle everything you encounter, so balance your risk/reward assessment. Focus instead on eliminating your opposition as quickly and efficiently as possible. #2: Don’t be tempted to hoard your secondary weapons and consumables–they’re easy to craft, and resources are plentiful. Points of interest are also a trigger for Outlaw and Okkar faction ambushes. #1: The longer you linger in a zone, the more likely you are to be ambushed by multiple waves of ships, including Drones, Fighters, Interceptors, Corvettes, and Frigates, finally culminating in mostly indestructible Colonial Warships jumping in at this point you should definitely tap out and jump out. Once you get past all the Breton and salt farming sections, things pick up rather nicely. The mystery itself had a lot of action to keep it moving forward. I loved how they interacted and worked together to solve the mystery. They were each individually enjoyable but also worked well together. I really liked the two main characters-Commissaire Dupin and Commissaire Rose. I mean the author writes with authority and authenticity but for the average reader just wanting to read a mystery novel and focus on that-those parts might be a little tedious. There was a lot of detail and while interesting, I don’t know that it was really all that necessary. While I enjoyed it, I don’t know that other readers will. The author did go into a lot of detail about the Bretons and the salt farming industry. The other part that was surprisingly interesting was the Bretons culture and history. I really loved that aspect of the story and for me that’s what made it quirky-the location and topic. I loved that it was set in the salt region of France, someplace that I know nothing about but now thanks to this story I have gotten a proper education. So many mysteries are set in familiar areas like London or Paris with the occasional book set in quaint country towns. I liked that this book was set in a completely random place. I didn’t feel terribly lost or confused as the focus was on the mystery rather than the larger storyline. This book is the third in the series (there are 6 books so far) and while it is part of a series, I thought it read perfectly well as a standalone. What’s going on in the salt works? Dupin and Rose search feverishly for clues and stumble upon false alibis, massive conflicts of interest, personal feuds-and ancient Breton legends ( summary from Goodreads). But he won’t be working alone because Sylvaine Rose is the investigator responsible for the department-and she lives up to her name… It is thanks to his secretary Nolwenn and the ambition of the prefect that Dupin is assigned to the case. The offender remains a mystery, and a short time later, Breval disappears without a trace. But when he starts snooping around mysterious barrels on behalf of Lilou Breval, a journalist friend, he finds himself unexpectedly under attack. He had actually been looking forward to escaping his endless paperwork and taking a trip to the “white country” between the raging Atlantic Ocean and idyllic rivers. Commissaire Dupin also starts to believe this when he’s attacked out of the blue in the salt works. The old salt farmers have always said that the violet scent of the Fleur de Sel at harvest time on the salt marshes of the Guérande Peninsula has been known to cause hallucinations. How does one make the ‘sea salt industry’ look glamorous and intriguing to the average reader? Even with a mystery? I was up for the challenge and dug right in. I debated about reviewing it but ultimately decided on picking it up. It’s 50/50 for me….either weird works or it doesn’t. Sometimes that works out and other times it doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I love traditional story telling with traditional themes and relatable stories but I also tend to gravitate toward strange or unusual books that are off the beaten path. I am always open to reading quirky books. It also kept crashing, despite me using the new ARM version on my M1 MacBook Pro. I struggled to use its complex and overly technical interface, only to get poor results. I cannot recommend Darktable, despite its zero price. If you are adamant about avoiding subscription software, then a combination of DxO PhotoLab and Affinity Photo can work well, providing great image quality, and serving to replace both Lightroom and Photoshop. But it is a poor choice for developing raw images. Affinity Photo works well as a Photoshop replacement, and at a low one-time cost.ON1 Photo RAW had its flaws as well, but can serve as a single-program replacement for both Lightroom and Photoshop.ACDSee Photo Studio, Exposure X7,and Luminar Neo produced good results, but all had flaws. The Adobe alternatives that provided the best raw image quality in my test nightscapes were Capture One and DxO PhotoLab.Though, as I’ve discovered, AI processing can ruin astrophotos if not applied carefully. Adobe Camera Raw (or its equivalent in Adobe Lightroom) still produces superb results, lacking only the latest in AI noise reduction, sharpening and special effects. Here’s a summary of my recommendations, with the evidence for my conclusions presented at length (!) in the sections that follow: Instead, the orthodox workflow is to stack and align undeveloped raw files with specialized “calibration” software such as DeepSkyStacker or PixInsight that outputs 16-bit or 32-bit TIFFs, bypassing any chance to work with the raw files. The reason - most deep-sky astrophotographers never use a raw developer anyway. NOTE: I did not test the programs with telescope images of nebulas or galaxies. I also looked at features for preparing and exporting a large batch of images to assemble into time-lapse movies, though the actual movie creation usually requires specialized software. I tested all the programs strictly for the purpose of processing, or “developing” raw files, using nightscape images as the tests. In addition to Adobe Camera Raw (represented by the Adobe Bridge icon), I tested, in alphabetical order, and from left to right in the icons above: I tested only programs that are offered for both MacOS and Windows, with identical or nearly identical features for both platforms. I tested them primarily on sample nightscape images described below. To find out, I compared eight programs, pitting them against what I still consider the standard for image quality when developing raw files, Adobe Camera Raw (the Develop module in Adobe Lightroom is essentially identical). How well do the latest versions of those programs compare now for astrophotography? And what new software choices do we have as we head into 2023? But 2017 was ages ago in the lifetime of software. You can find that earlier survey here on my blog. Patience!Īs a background, in December 2017 I tested ten contenders vying to be alternatives to Adobe’s suite of software. The review is illustrated with 50 high-resolution, downloadable images which will take a while to load. Warning! This is a long and technical blog, but for those interested in picking the best software, I think you’ll find it the most comprehensive test of programs for processing nightscapes. I test nine programs for processing raw files for the demands of nightscape astrophotography. "His hand was up in the air, and he was arching way back," says Baker. Baker, not knowing what to do, smacked it. Burke, waiting on deck, thrust his hand enthusiastically over his head to greet his friend at the plate. It was a wild, triumphant moment and a good omen as the Dodgers headed to the playoffs. As journalist Jon Mooallem tells the story: It was Baker's 30th home run, making the Dodgers the first team in history to have four hitters with at least 30 home runs each in a single season. In the sixth inning, Dusty Baker hit a home run off Houston Astros pitcher J. Glenn Burke and Dusty Baker įor decades, the " conventional wisdom" has been that the origin of the high five occurred between Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on October 2, 1977, the last day of the regular season. Others have suggested it originated in the women's volleyball circuit of the 1960s. Magic Johnson once suggested that he invented the high five at Michigan State, presumably in the late 1970s. The exact transition from a low five to a high is unknown, though many theories exist about its inception. The "high five" originated from the " low five", which has been a part of African-American culture since the 1920s. The phrase is related to the slang "give me five" which is a request for some form of handshake – variations include "slap me five", "slip me five", "give me (some) skin" – with "five" referring to the number of fingers on a hand. The use of the phrase as a noun has been part of the Oxford English Dictionary since 1980 and as a verb since 1981. Photo of Drew Storen (right) and Wilson Ramos of the Washington Nationals in 2011. It may have its own set of drawbacks but its pros will always outweigh its cons. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the best video editing software that you can find in the market. The NCH VideoPad Video Editor is a very reliable software. Nonetheless, it works pretty well on short clips. The responsiveness of the software is usually affected by the quality and length of the videos that you are editing. The same goes for clip previews and sequence previews. As for the VideoPad Video Editor, I noticed that it lags a lot especially when I’m editing lengthy video clips and multiple tracks. So I really commend NCH for being considerate.Įven so, every software has its own set of drawbacks. To be honest, watermarks are annoying and they’re totally unnecessary. So it doesn’t really matter if you only know a little about converting your files to HD.įurthermore, the VideoPad Video Editor won’t force you to embed watermarks on your videos. Just select the option for direct YouTube video upload then choose your desired format and that’s it. For example, when uploading your videos to YouTube, there’s no need for you to set its resolution to 720p or 1080p. Another thing that I like about this software is that there’s no need for you to worry about the video quality since the software will provide you with pre-formatted settings. You can also upload your videos to various media sharing sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. In addition, this software will also give you the option to save your videos according to your preferred format. If that’s not enough to satisfy you, you might as well create videos out of your audio and screen recordings. You’re also allowed to capture or record videos from your camcorder or web camera. You can also use photos, custom texts and subtitles. You can split clips into multiple parts and you can even add multiple tracks into one timeline or storyboard. You can adjust the clip speed, position and orientation. For example, when editing videos, you can add a variety of video effects and transitions. You can do a lot of things that you usually cannot do on other video editing tools. The best thing about this software is that it’s feature-packed. It’s great for creating short music video clips, animated gifs, lyric videos and a whole lot more. While this software is not really meant for commercial and professional purposes, you can still make the most out of its features. It features a full suite of tools that you can use for editing videos but it is only intended for home use. The NCH VideoPad Video Editor is a very nifty tool especially for video editing amateurs. Be sure to uncheck during installation to avoid installing this added and unnecessary software.
